When shut down for maintenance or repairs though, employees expect the energy flow to the equipment to be interrupted, disconnected, or shut-off. Lockout/Tagout addressed this issue.
This unexpected release of energy is a major hazard during servicing or maintenance. After turning a machine off, employees must also turn off all energy sources and make sure they cannot be released unexpectedly. There are procedures to follow for safe lockout of equipment.
